Access to the Dictionary

As of December 1st 2009 I had put the dictionary under login-only access. If anyone would like temporary access to the dictionary to check it out I will be able to grant a temporary pass. I appologize for the inconvenience.

Description

Created 2009. I designed and developed this PHP driven dictionary to display over 7000 Potawatomi words and phrases. The site is driven by Object Oriented PHP and features a hand coded AJAX search suggest feature.

Once the initial page is loaded, clicking menu items and using the search suggest reloads content into the page with AJAX. This page is still SEO friendly though. If Javascript was turned off (simulating how Search Engines would crawl the site) the links would still work, but without the ajax feature.

Since there are over 7000 menu items, I built in the search suggest feature in order to make finding words easier. Every time a word is added, updated or deleted, an XML file is updated from the database and the AJAX is told to reset the cache for the search suggest. The search suggest then iterates through the XML list and finds words that match what the user is typing into the search suggest field.

This system allows multiple users to update the database via an inline form. These users can add words to the database from the site, or choose a word and then edit or delete it. This feature is powered by AJAX as well to ensure a smooth user experience.

Site Features

Object Oriented PHP Backend

AJAX Search Suggest

MySQL database that contains the words, user info and cache settings

Pictures and audio that are easy to add to dictionary elements

Description

Developed 2009. I was approached by a client who wanted a customized version of Moodle installed on their server. They needed Moodle to perform a few functions beyond the normal scope of the LMS. I was able to use php and css to modify the backend and the design in order meet the clients needs.

Project Requirements

Modify the registration to include more initial data collection from the site users than the standard registration collects. To accomplish this I had to modify not only the php, but the Moodle database.

Create a method for the client to export a spreadsheet with student’s information and course stats. To accomplish this I had to modify the php in the very helpful Feedback plugin.

Create a customized Certificate that students could download as a pdf once they completed the course. This was done with the Certificate plugin which I modified to include custom student data from the database.

Develop a custom theme that matched the design and branding of the clients other modules and sites. This was simple! I modified an existing theme with custom graphics and a single css file.

Skills Employed

Custom Moodle Installation and Development

PHP Development

CSS Development

CSS Reset, A Simple Approach

When I began designing websites, all of the styles were inline with the HTML. Needless to say, creating large sites was a desperate pain in the bottom. Eventually I learned how to create external sheets with CSS and Web design for the first time became a pleasure. I’ve picked up a few tricks along the way and would like to share one of the simplest, but handiest line of css code that I know.

The Asterisk!

* {
padding:0;
margin:0;
}

This asterisk simply refers to all tags. It sets all defaults to have no padding or margins. This may be a pain at first because elements such as p tags will lose their spacing, but you can simply define what you want the padding and spacing to be. This takes some of the browser variation out of the equation and simplifies the task of getting your designs to look exact in every browser.

Another addition to my simple CSS Reset Stylesheets is to set the border to none where images are inside “a” tags. Otherwise you may get a blue line around thumbnail links… Yuck!

a img {
border:none;
}

Simple, right?

Some designers use heavy CSS Reset stylesheets. Eric Meyer for instance uses a strongly developed CSS Stylesheet that resets many of the default browser styles to a stripped down starting point. The method I use is far more simple, not better in all cases, just simpler to start with. I hope this helps.

Welcome to my redesigned portfolio website. This site is powered by Wordpress and was developed from scratch. Yes, I could have used the Default template, but that would have been too easy.

This build has given me the opportunity to explore some plugins and the built in functions of Wordpress. It is a simple and powerful system and best of all, it’s opensource and free for all.

I am going to miss the thumbnail gallery with the Jquery Thickbox from my older site, but this site gives me the power to update content through blog posts and comes with a powerful backend built in. I’ll be adding some of my older media projects soon, so I think I’ll bring the thickbox back for video at least. Maybe. We’ll see.
